How to play Rabbit

  1. Win a hole outright (lowest net score, no ties) to catch the rabbit
  2. If a hole is tied, nothing changes — the holder keeps the rabbit, or it stays loose
  3. If a different player wins a hole while you hold the rabbit, the rabbit is SET FREE — not transferred
  4. Once free, the rabbit can be captured by the next player to win a hole outright
  5. At hole 9, whoever holds the rabbit wins the front-nine round
  6. The rabbit resets to loose at hole 10 — a new chase begins for the back nine
  7. At hole 18, whoever holds the rabbit wins the back-nine round
  8. If no one holds the rabbit at a checkpoint hole, the round total goes unclaimed (or carries over)

Standard golf order — furthest from hole plays first, honors to previous hole winner

Ties: Ties result in no change — rabbit stays with holder or remains loose

Hold the rabbit when it counts: end of hole 9 and end of hole 18

Strategy

  • You don't need to catch the rabbit early — you need to hold it at hole 9 or 18
  • Play defense when someone else holds it. One outright win frees the rabbit, then you can catch it
  • Ties are your friend when you hold the rabbit — you don't need to win, just don't lose
  • The back nine rabbit is often more valuable if the front nine went unclaimed and carries over

Example

  • Dave15 HCPChaser
  • Tom8 HCPChaser
  • Sarah12 HCPChaser

Approaching hole 9. Dave currently holds the rabbit.

What happens

  1. Hole 7: Dave won outright — Dave catches the rabbit
  2. Hole 8: Tom wins outright — rabbit is SET FREE (Dave loses it, Tom does NOT get it)
  3. Hole 9: Tom wins outright again — Tom catches the freed rabbit. Tom holds it at hole 9 and wins the front-nine round!
  4. Hole 10: Rabbit resets to loose. New chase begins for the back nine.

With 4 players at 5 points per rabbit: Tom collects 5 points from each opponent = 15 points for the front nine

Tom won the front-nine rabbit. All players start fresh on hole 10 for the back-nine rabbit.
